The Story of Father’s Day
Mrs. John B. Dodd, of Washington, first proposed the idea of a “father’s day” in 1909. Mrs. Dodd wanted a special day to honor her father, William Smart. William Smart, a Civil War veteran, was widowed when his wife (Mrs. Dodd’s mother) died in childbirth with their sixth child. Mr. Smart was left to raise the newborn and his other five children by himself on a rural farm in eastern Washington state. It was after Mrs. Dodd became an adult that she realized the strength and selflessness her father had shown in raising his children as a single parent.
The first Father’s Day was observed on June 19, 1910 in Spokane Washington. At about the same time in various towns and cities across American other people were beginning to celebrate a “father’s day.” In 1924 President Calvin Coolidge supported the idea of a national Father’s Day. Finally in 1966 President Lyndon Johnson signed a presidential proclamation declaring the 3rd Sunday of June as Father’s Day.
Father’s Day has become a day to not only honor your father, but all men who act as a father figure. Stepfathers, uncles, grandfathers, and adult male friends are all honored on Father’s Day. (source http://www.holidays .net)

CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR GRADUATES
FROM METROPOLITAN STEFAN SOROKA

You have graduated! Congratulations to you! The Church shares in your happiness in this happy and significant accomplishment in your life. Yes, you succeeded, with a lot of good help and guidance. All of our successes are due to more than our own personal effort. God was there throughout the journey with His loving presence. It is His grace which enables you to have the spiritual strength to appreciate your studies and to achieve graduation. So, make a special effort to thank God in His holy Church. While you are there, remember in a special way in your prayers the dedicated teachers and administrators of your school. Recall how they were patient and tolerant with you, and how they offered their words of instruction, correction and encouragement. They wanted the best for you and they are proud to see you graduate. Your parents and your family members deserve a special place in your prayers in Church. They offered their love and encouragement for your success. They enabled your maturing in the process of completing your educational goals. You did not journey alone. Give praise to God and thanksgiving for the gift of the people who journeyed with you.
So many people are especially proud of you at this time of your graduation. They will continue to want only the best for you. God only wants the best from you. He created you and inspires you to be your best. Be happy and proud of your achievement! Rejoice in it. Let it be an inspiration for you to accomplish many more great things in your life. Pray to the Holy Spirit for the confidence and strength to pursue your dreams in life. We pray that your success will lead you to surrender yourself to God’s service of His people as a priest, as a religious sister, or as a loving and dedicated member of God’s holy Church. Our Blessed Mother rejoiced in her saying ‘yes’ to God. Know of her love and comforting presence with you in your daily life, and at this happy time of your graduation.
CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL OF OUR GRADUATES!
GOD BLESS YOU RICHLY IN HIS WAYS!
