The Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts
“A typical lenten service is the Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts. Already in the first centuries there was a custom during the Forty Days Fast to omit the celebration of the Divine Liturgy because, at that time, it was still linked with agape, that is the love banquet, and this was not in keeping with the spirit of fasting. Furthermore, the Divine Liturgy was regarded as a joyous mystery; for this reason, it’s celebration was limited to Saturday and Sunday. On the other days of the week, to give the faithful an opportunity to receive Holy Communion, the Divine Liturgy was replaced by other services, from which the Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts developed in time. Actually, this is not a Liturgy in the sense of the word, for it does not have consecration of bread and wine: but rather, it is a Vespers service combined with the rite of Holy Communion, for which the bread was previously consecrated. Hence the name of Presanctified Gifts. ” Julian J. Katrij, OSBM, A Byzantine Rite Liturgical Year

The Holy and Great Fast
“Because we did not fast we were banished from paradise.
So then let us fast so as to return back to paradise”
(St. Basil, On Fasting I)
“The great Holy Fast, called also the Forty Days Fast, is one of the oldest and most sacred Christian practices. The history of the Great Fast is long and rich in tradition, dating from Apostolic times. The pre-paschal fast is called Great, not only because of the duration but also because of it’s significance in the life of the Church and of every Christian. ” Julian J. Katrij, OSBM, A Byzantine Rite Liturgical Year

Metropolitan Stefan’s Reflection for Second Sunday of Great Fast
Did you notice that every major television network recently provided live coverage of the golfer Tiger Woods’ apology? He impressed as contrite and sincere when he admitted to his adulteress behavior and the harm it had caused to his family and to friends and supporters. The subsequent reaction by television commentators and others was very mixed. Some applauded the apology while others criticized it citing various insufficiencies. What was your reaction? How do you and I offer forgiveness to those who have disappointed us?
Jesus forgave without analysis of whether one might impress as sincere or contrite, sufficient or not. We read in the Gospels how some people later criticized Jesus for the way he treated sinners, and after Jesus healed people. God forgives outright! Look at how Jesus specifically cited the apostle Peter by name after His resurrection, even though Peter had denied Him three times. No analysis or questioning of Peter’s sincerity. Unconditional forgiveness! Seek it for yourself during Great Fast! Practice it with others every day!

1st Sunday of the Great Fast

Sunday of Orthodoxy
February 21, 2010

“We pay homage to Your undefiled image, good Lord, and beg pardon for our faults, Christ our God.” (Troparion)

THE SUNDAY OF ORTHODOXY – The first Sunday of the Great Fast is called the Sunday of Orthodoxy. What do we mean by “orthodoxy”? The word “orthodoxy” stems from the Greek word “orthodoxia” (or ortho=right; doksa=opinion) which signifies the true faith and the true worship of God. We are not speaking here of orthodoxy as we understand it today as being opposed to the Catholic Church, but orthodoxy, as applied to the whole Church of Christ until the schism between the Eastern and Western Churches which occurred in the eleventh century. The orthodoxy that we celebrate this Sunday is universal-catholic orthodoxy, professed by the entire Church of Christ of the first centuries in the battle against the heresy of Iconoclasm (an image breaking heresy). The Sunday of Orthodoxy is a festival for the whole Church, both Eastern and Western. It is the festive celebration of the decisive victory over Iconoclasm and other heresies. Julian J.

The Sunday of Cheesefare
“The Holy Church in gradually preparing us for the fast, permits us to eat meat for the last time on Meatfare Sunday.” In years past, “During Cheesefare week, however, she permitted us to eat only dairy products. Just as we bid farewell to meat on Meatfare Sunday, so too we bid farewell to dairy products on Cheesefare Sunday. Hence, the name Cheesefare Sunday. Our people called this week cheese-or butter-week. This Sunday was the last day for pre-Lenten amusements.
On the Saturday before Cheesefare Sunday, in order to provide us with an example and an incentive for fasting and penance, holy Church celebrates the memory of those men and women who, from the earliest times, devoted their lives to prayer, fasting and penance in monasteries or as hermits in the deserts. Julian J. Katrij, OSBM, A Byzantine Rite Liturgical Year

February 8, 2010

The following is a brief summary of the minutes taken at the Parish and Pastoral meeting which was held on February 04, 2010.
High levels of contamination, such as the presence of exposed asbestos, unhealthy mold & mildew, and higher than normal reading of radon gas have been detected in the Parish Rectory., These problems create an unacceptable health environment which may have caused respiratory problems for our pastors family. Fr. Orest met with Archbishop Stefan Soroka, to notify him of this situation. He responded quickly, and gave him full authorization to immediately address these problems. MAC’S Restoration LLC which specialized in the removal of asbestos mold and mildew did the work with a cost of $2931.68

Temporary housing was provided by Extended Stay Hotels, Wilkes-Barre, Pa, at 129.00 per day.

Bids are currently being accepted for drainage problem that exists on the creek side of the rectory which contributes to the mold and mildew situation. Tadon problems will be corrected following the remediation of asbestos, mold, and mildew at a cost of $695.00.

Archbishop Stefan Soroka has procured an official replica of the Shroud of Turin for display at our Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Philadelphia. The replica will be on exhibition at the cathedral from February 21, 2010-June 29, 2010. A bus trip will be held on Sunday, April 25, 2010. Since this is a spiritual event, Father Orest requests young and old alike attend. Dr. Michael Labuda is in charge of the trip. Part of the cost will be covered by our Parish funds. Each parishioner will be asked to contribute a certain amount. Bus companies will be called to consider the cost of the trip. Additional information will be featured in future bulletins.

Our Parish sign will be installed sometime in the spring.

“The Lord is coming and who will not fear Him?  Who will be able to appear before His face?  O my soul, prepare for this encounter.”  (Ode 3 of the Canon in the Matins of the Sunday of Meatfare)

The Sunday of Meatfare
“The week following the Sunday of the Prodigal Son is called Meatfare week and it terminated on the Sunday called Meatfare Sunday.  Meatfare Sunday is the last day on which it was still permissible to eat meat before the Great Fast.  Meatfare means “farewell to meat.”  Hence, the name “meatfare” Sunday.  Of course, we are speaking here of the time when the Great Fast was observed in all strictness.
The Sunday of Meatfare is also called the Sunday of the terrible judgement.  In this day’s Gospel Christ speaks of the terrible Judgement, of the reward of the righteous, and the eternal punishment of the wicked.  The entire service of this day is devoted to the Last Judgement.  By recalling the manner in which the Terrible Judgement will be carried out, this service is designed to fill us with salutary fear, sorrow for our sins and to stress the importance of good works, especially works of mercy.”  Julian J. Katrij, OSBM, A Byzantine Rite Liturgical Year
