The Feast of Saint Nicholas, December 6th
Our holy Father Nicholas gives us a beautiful example of a living, active, and sacrificial love of God and neighbor. His love of neighbor is universal, all-embracing, full of mercy and ready to assist in every necessity of soul and body. St. Nicholas saw Jesus Christ in his neighbor and that is why he quickly and generously hastened to help him in every need. The Holy Gospel says that at the Last Judgement the Lord will judge us by our works of love and mercy. Christ assures us of this when He says: “Amen I say to you, as long as you did it for one of these, the least of my brethren, you did it for Me.” (Matthew 25,40) Julian J. Conception of Saint Ann, December 9th
When She Conceived the Most Holy Mother of God (Immaculate Conception)
How wonderfully and marvelously God prepared her who was to be the Mother of our Savior. She – full of grace, holly, most pure and immaculate – became the worthy tabernacle, in which the Son of God dwelt. Our ancient Slavonic Prologue contains the following instruction for the feast of the Conception of St. Ann: “Beloved, today is the beginning of our salvation. In the womb of the righteous Ann, after the annunciation of the angel, the grand-daughter of the Just Jesse, of the line of David, is conceived…And know beloved, that today we are celebrating the Conception of our Lady the Most Pure Queen – the God bearer, Mother of God. Therefore, let us hasten to her church with joy, and remain there in awesome prayer; with a vigil let us open the doors of the heavenly chamber, and let us beautify ourselves with prayer, alms and fasting. Thus let us celebrate the holy Conception of the Most Pure Lady the Mother of God devoutly and with joy, for She unceasingly prays to her Son and our God for us.” Julian J. RELIGIOUS EDUCATION – Religious Education Classes will take a break this weekend for Thanksgiving. Classes resume next weekend, Saturday, December 5th in the church school building from 9:30 AM to 11:30 AM.
FOOD PANTRY DONATION – A total of 126 items were collected at the Turkey-Fest for the Catholic Community of North End Food Pantry. Our donation was taken to the food pantry last weekend in time to be used to assemble baskets for those in need at the Thanksgiving Holiday. Thanks to all who donated to this worthy cause.
BIRTHDAY GREETINGS – Birthday Greetings to Myron Feszchak (12/8). May God grant him long life, good health and happiness. MNOHAYA BLAHAYA LITA!
CHRISTMAS DECORATING – We will be decorating the church for the holidays today, Sunday, December 6th starting at 2:00 PM. Please come out to help, many hands will make short work.
CHOIR PRACTICE – The choir will meet to practice for the Christmas Season after decorating on Sunday, December 6th. Please make every effort to come out and brush up on music for the upcoming holiday.
CHRISTMAS CAROL SING ALONG – Our Choir’s Annual Christmas Carol Sing-Along will be held Sunday, December 13, 2009, starting at 2:00p.m. All are invited to join in the joyous singing of our traditional Ukrainian Koliada (carols) as well as many other, in anticipation of Christmas. Carols will be sung in the church followed by a cold buffet reception in the lower level of the church. Please feel free to contribute salads and or desserts for the event. Saint Nicholas will also pay a visit.
PARISH SIGN DONATIONS – Plans are being finalized for our new parish sign. The sign will be roughly 2 feet by 5 feet, double sided and installed in front of the church. Renderings of the sign are posted on the bulletin board in the back of the church. If you’d like to make a donation to help defray the cost, please place your donation with the collection using a Supplemental Envelope from the back of the Church and label it “Parish Sign”.
CEMETERY RULES & REGULATIONS – Out of respect for all parish families and their deceased members, these rules and regulations were designed for the uniform appearance, ease of maintenance, safety, and cleanliness of our cemetery. Please give your full co-operation. Thank you.
All decorations, including unplanted and artificial flowers, must be removed before March 31 or be subject to removal. Christmas decorations must be removed by January 31. All stone, metal, and other borders around monuments or memorials are prohibited. Only low borders, one inch above ground level, are permitted in front of hillside graves in order to prevent erosion. No shrub or tree planting is allowed. Loose stone and / or gravel are prohibited on any grave plot. Persons causing any damage to cemetery property will be liable. No dumping on the cemetery grounds or beyond the perimeter. No walking pets through the cemetery. No trespassing on cemetery property after hours. Cemetery hours are 7:00 AM to sundown. These Rules Effective Immediately.
MALANKA 2010 – The 6th Annual Ukrainian New Year Dinner Dance – MALANKA – will take place on Friday evening, January 15, 2010, 6:00pm to 1:00am at St. Vladimir Parish Center, 428 North Seventh Avenue, Scranton. Michael Trusz and Kathleen Izak are serving as chairman and cochairman respectively. Tickets are $40 and can be obtained by calling Dr. Michael Labuda at 820-7105. Dinner buffet will include borchsh, holubchi, chicken Kyiv, kobasa, pyrohy and more, along with a cash bar. Dancing to the internationally known orchestra Fata Morgana and a late night champagne toast are also included.
SLOATSBURG JUBILEES – During the next two years the Sister Servants of Mary Immaculate will be celebrating two milestones in their history. December 8th will mark the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the American Province, under the patronage of the Immaculate Conception and during the coming year 2010, they will celebrate 75 years of ministry in the United States. The celebration of this double jubilee will take place during the weekend of December 11-13, 2009, being highlighted by a special Divine Liturgy of Thanksgiving and a banquet. Adds are being sold for a remembrance book, please pick up a copy of the ad form in the back of the church. In addition the Sisters are embarking on a project to build a shrine to Blessed Josaphata (their foundress) on the grounds of their home in Sloatsburg. The small chapel will be a place of prayer, open year round, where people could come to light candles and pray to Blessed Josaphata for her intercession before God. Memorial Pavers for the walkway leading to the chapel will be sold to help defray the costs of the construction. Forms to sponsor those pavers are also available in the back of the church.
FEAST OF SAINT NICHOLAS – The Slovak Hertitage Society of N. E. PA cordially invites you to celebrate The Feast of Saint Nicholas by singing their beautiful Slovak Christmas Carols and sharing Christmas Memories. Slovak Hospitality will follow. Sunday, December 6, 2009, 2:00 p.m. at St. Matthews Evangelical Lutheran Church, 663 North Main Street, Wilkes-Barre, PA.
CATHEDRAL CAROLS – Annual Festival of Christmas Carols will be held on Sunday, January 10, 2010 at 3 p.m. at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Philadelphia. Choirs from different parishes will participate. Everyone is welcome.

From earliest times, the feast of Christmas was given equal rank with the feast of the Resurrection (Easter). For this reason the Typicon looks upon the Nativity of Christ as another Pasch (Easter). In old typicons and liturgical Psalters, under the 25th of December, there is this note: “The Pasch, a three day feast.” Thus, just as the faithful prepared themselves for the feast of the Pasch with prayer and fasting, so too, they prepared themselves for the coming of Christ the Savior with the Christmas fast. NOTICE REGARDING HOLY DAY – This notice is written to remind the clergy and faithful that the Holy Day of the Conception of St. Anne (Immaculate Conception) is celebrated on Wednesday, December 9th. It is not a Holy Day of Obligation. HEALTH CARE REFORM – Congress continues to debate health care reform legislation. While the U.S. House passed a health care bill that prevents the federal government from funding elective abortions, the U.S. bishops remain deeply concerned about Senate action, especially as it will affect abortion funding, conscience rights, affordability for the poor and vulnerable, and accessibility for immigrants. Last weekend you received a special flier/bulletin insert from the U.S. Bishops Conference asking you to please contact your Senators immediately and urge them to address these moral issues. The flier/bulletin insert included a web address that allows you to send an email message to Congress with a click of a button. Additional fliers/bulletin inserts can be found in the back of church. The bishops have asked for our swift action and our prayers. Thank you for your help. We can help make sure that health care reform will be about saving lives, not destroying them.

NEW COUNCILS TO BE FORMED – At the Parish Meeting last week Father informed those in attendance that following the new policy from the Chancery, a new (6-12 member) Parish Pastoral Council will be formed.  This council will replace the existing parish Building and Grounds, Pastoral and Cemetery Committees.  Father has selected members for this council and they will be announced after their approval by the Chancery.  The Pastor/Administrator (Father) will serve as the chairman for the council.  The decisions of the Parish Pastoral Council will be advisory only, and not be binding on the Pastor/Administrator (Father) or the parish.  This change will take affect on December 1, 2009.  Also included in the changes from the Chancery, starting January 1, 2010 a (2-3 member) Parish Finance Council will replace the function of the existing Trustees and Finance Committees.  Upon approval from the Chancery those council members will also be announced.  Father wishes to extend his thanks to all who served on the committees.
CEMETERY RULES & REGULATIONS – Out of respect for all parish families and their deceased members, these rules and regulations were designed for the uniform appearance, ease of maintenance, safety, and cleanliness of our cemetery.  Please give your full co-operation.  Thank you.
All decorations, including unplanted and artificial flowers, must be removed before March 31 or be subject to removal.  Christmas decorations must be removed by January 31.  All stone, metal, and other borders around monuments or memorials are prohibited.  Only low borders, one inch above ground level, are permitted in front of hillside graves in order to prevent erosion. No shrub or tree planting is allowed.  Loose stone and / or gravel are prohibited on any grave plot.  Persons causing any damage to cemetery property will be liable.  No dumping on the cemetery grounds or beyond the perimeter.  No walking pets through the cemetery.  No trespassing on cemetery property after hours.  Cemetery hours are 7:00 AM to sundown.  These Rules Effective Immediately.
NOTICE REGARDING HOLY DAY – This notice is written to remind the clergy and faithful that the Holy Day of the Conception of St. Anne (Immaculate Conception) is celebrated on Wednesday, December 9th.  It is not a Holy Day of Obligation.  By decree of the Ukrainian Bishops of the Metropolitan Province of Philadelphia on November 30, 2006 this Holy Day has been re-appointed to its original celebration.

SLOATSBURG JUBILEES – During the next two years the Sister Servants of Mary Immaculate will be celebrating two milestones in their history. December 8th will mark the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the American Province, under the patronage of the Immaculate Conception and during the coming year 2010, they will celebrate 75 years of ministry in the United States.  The celebration of this double jubilee will take place during the weekend of December 11-13, 2009, being highlighted by a special Divine Liturgy of Thanksgiving and a banquet.  Ads are being sold for a remembrance book, please pick up a copy of the ad form in the back of the church.  In addition the Sisters are embarking on a project to build a shrine to Blessed Josaphata (their foundress) on the grounds of their home in Sloatsburg.  The small chapel will be a place of prayer, open year round, where people could come to light candles and pray to Blessed Josaphata for her intercession before God.  Memorial Pavers for the walkway leading to the chapel will be sold to help defray the costs of the construction.  Forms to sponsor those pavers are also available in the back of the church.
HEALTH CARE REFORM – Congress continues to debate health care reform legislation.  While the U.S. House passed a health care bill that prevents the federal government from funding elective abortions, the U.S. bishops remain deeply concerned about Senate action, especially as it will affect abortion funding, conscience rights, affordability for the poor and vulnerable, and accessibility for immigrants.  In your bulletins today, you’ll find a newly updated flier/bulletin insert from the U.S. Bishops Conference asking you to please contact your Senators immediately and urge them to address these moral issues.  The flier/bulletin insert includes a web address that allows you to send an email message to Congress with a click of a button.  The bishops have asked for our swift action and our prayers.  Thank you for your help.  We can help make sure that health care reform will be about saving lives, not destroying them.

From earliest times, the feast of Christmas was given equal rank with the feast of the Resurrection (Easter). For this reason the Typicon looks upon the Nativity of Christ as another Pasch (Easter). In old typicons and liturgical Psalters, under the 25th of December, there is this note: “The Pasch, a three day feast.” Thus, just as the faithful prepared themselves for the feast of the Pasch with prayer and fasting, so too, they prepared themselves for the coming of Christ the Savior with the Christmas fast. An ancient tradition relates that Mary’s parents, Saints Joachim and Anna, were childless for many years.  They implored God to send them a child, for a childless family was looked upon as cursed by God.  They also promised to dedicate their child to God’s service, if their petition was granted.  God heard their prayer and Anna gave birth to a girl whom they called Mary.  When Mary was three years old her parents took her to Jerusalem and presented her to the High Priest in the temple where, according to tradition, she was educated.  Mary was educated in the temple with other girls.  Her daily life consisted of prayer, work and other services.  (Rev. PARISH MEETING – Parish Meeting will change to Bi-Monthly, Starting in November.  The meetings will be normally be held on the Fourth Tuesday of every other month.  The November meeting will be held on Tuesday, November 17th at 6:30 p.m. due to the Thanksgiving Holiday.  Our Monthly parish meetings are held to discuss and coordinate cooperatively the work of the parish.
ACTIVITIES COMMITTEE MEETING – The November Meeting of the Activities Committee will be held on Thursday, November 19, 2009 at 6:30 p.m. in the lower level of the church.  All are welcome to attend and participate.

CHRISTMAS CAROL SING ALONG – Our Choir’s Annual Christmas Carol Sing-Along will be held Sunday, December 13, 2009, starting at 2:00p.m.  All are invited to join in the joyous singing of our traditional Ukrainian Koliada (carols) as well as many other, in anticipation of Christmas.  Carols will be sung in the church followed by a cold buffet reception in the lower level of the church.  Saint Nicholas will also pay a visit.  Mark your calendars and plan to make this part of your celebration of the Nativity of Our Lord.

Feast of Saint Michael the Archangel & All Angels – November 8, 2009
Saint Michael (Michael means “Who is like God”) is the leader of the heavenly hosts and the greatest adversary of Satan. Under his leadership the faithful Angels defeated Lucifer, the chieftain of the rebellious angels. This feast was instituted at the time of emperor Constantine the Great in the fourth century.
Saint Michael became patron of Kiev, capital of Ukraine, since the early days of Christianity in our country. The Church honors all the angelic choirs on the same day, when it pays a tribute of honor to their leader, St. Michael. My Divine Friend, Rev. Michael Schudlo, CSSR.

SLOATSBURG JUBILEES – During the next two years the Sister Servants of Mary Immaculate will be celebrating two milestones in their history. December 8th will mark the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the American Province, under the patronage of the Immaculate Conception and during the coming year 2010, they will celebrate 75 years of ministry in the United States. The celebration of this double jubilee will take place during the weekend of December 11-13, 2009, being highlighted by a special Divine Liturgy of Thanksgiving and a banquet. All stone, metal, and other borders around monuments or memorials are prohibited. Only low borders, one inch above ground level, are permitted in front of hillside graves in order to prevent erosion.
No shrub or tree planting is allowed.
Loose stone and / or gravel are prohibited on any grave plot.
Persons causing any damage to cemetery property will be liable.
No dumping on the cemetery grounds or beyond the perimeter.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION – The Cross Valley Religious Education program began its 2009-2010 school year this Saturday. Classes are free, and are held on Saturday mornings in the church school building at Saints Peter and Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church, on River Street in Wilkes-Barre, from 9:30 AM to 11:30 AM. Families with school aged children grades one through eight are invited to participate. What is the spiritual message of the fallen leaves in autumn?
And why does God make leaves transform into beautiful, magnificent colors just before they loosen from the tree, float to the ground, and die?
God shows us beautiful leaves during the introspective season of autumn because He is reminding us of positive and pure actions that we have overlooked. We have accomplished greatly during the past year, yet we do not usually give ourselves credit for meaningful and righteous deeds. We need to know that we have much to build on for the coming year, and we should take pride in who we are and what we have done. Yes, we need to improve and eliminate some misguided deeds and character traits — but we can only do that by building on the positive accomplishments of the past year.
We must also realize that even though we have many good deeds under our belts, we can never rest on our laurels. The beautiful leaves fall and the tree remains bare to show that we must start to build new and better deeds in the coming year.
Yes, we rake in all of our leaves, all of our hundreds and hundreds of magnificent holy actions, but we must renew and start again to grow new leaves. We must make all our actions, all our leaves, “for healing” — for helping others and ourselves achieve great heights — as the prophet proclaims: “So its waters will grow from the Sanctuary, so its fruit will be for food and its leaves for healing.” (Ezekiel 47:12)
In a week or two, we’ll be heading outside with rake in hand. But instead of feeling frustrated by the mounds of leaves, let’s try to contemplate our actions, one by one, leaf by leaf. Let’s gather all of our deeds from the previous year, and look to create more of those healing leaves that cure, one by one, the spiritual darkness and disease in our lives.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION – The Cross Valley Religious Education program begins its 2009-2010 school year on Saturday, October 31, at 9:30 AM.  We welcome back returning students from last year and look forward to meeting new students this year.  Classes are free, and are held on Saturday mornings in the church school building at Saints Peter and Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church, on River Street in Wilkes-Barre, from 9:30 AM to 11:30 AM.  Families with school aged children grades one through eight are invited to participate.  Graduates of the program are invited to assist with the program’s various social, cultural and religious activities.  A schedule is available on our church bulletin board.  Please call Christine Mash at 735-1784 for more information.
PYROHY SALE – We’ll be making pyrohy on Tuesday and Wednesday November 17th and 18th. Place your order by calling Verna Kozicki (824-6090). Limited quantities will be made so place your order soon. This may be the last opportunity to buy pyrohy before Christmas. Get them now to freeze for the holidays. Pyrohy will be sold for $5.50/dozen.

SLOATSBURG JUBILEES – During the next two years the Sister Servants of Mary Immaculate will be celebrating two milestones in their history. December 8th will mark the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the American Province, under the patronage of the Immaculate Conception and during the coming year 2010, they will celebrate 75 years of ministry in the United States. The celebration of this double jubilee will take place during the weekend of December 11-13, 2009, being highlighted by a special Divine Liturgy of Thanksgiving and a banquet. Adds are being sold for a remembrance book, please pick up a copy of the ad form in the back of the church. In addition the Sisters are embarking on a project to build a shrine to Blessed Josaphata (their foundress) on the grounds of their home in Sloatsburg. The small chapel will be a place of prayer, open year round, where people could come to light candles and pray to Blessed Josaphata for her intercession before God. Memorial Pavers for the walkway leading to the chapel will be sold to help defray the costs of the construction. Forms to sponsor those pavers are also available in the back of the church.

All decorations, including unplanted and artificial flowers, must be removed before March 31 or be subject to removal. Christmas decorations must be removed by January 31.
All stone, metal, and other borders around monuments or memorials are prohibited. Only low borders, one inch above ground level, are permitted in front of hillside graves in order to prevent erosion.
No shrub or tree planting is allowed.
Loose stone and / or gravel are prohibited on any grave plot.
Persons causing any damage to cemetery property will be liable.
No dumping on the cemetery grounds or beyond the perimeter.
No walking pets through the cemetery.
No trespassing on cemetery property after hours. Cemetery hours are 7:00 AM to sundown.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION – The Cross Valley Religious Education program begins its 2009-2010 school year on Saturday, October 31, at 9:30 AM.  We welcome back returning students from last year and look forward to meeting new students this year.  Classes are free, and are held on Saturday mornings in the church school building at Saints Peter and Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church, on River Street in Wilkes-Barre, from 9:30 AM to 11:30 AM.  Families with school aged children grades one through eight are invited to participate.  Graduates of the program are invited to assist with the program’s various social, cultural and religious activities.  A schedule is available on our church bulletin board.  Please call Christine Mash at 735-1784 for more information.

SILENT AUCTION – The Social Concerns Committee of the Catholic Community of North Wilkes-Barre and Holy Saviur / St. Christopher will sponsor a “Silent Auction” on Sunday, October 18th at Sacred Heart School Gym, 607 North Main Street, Wilkes-Barre. There is no admission fee. Tcket donation is $5.00, which entitles you to 25 tickets to bid on an assortment of new items for adults as well as children. Bidding will be from 11:30 AM to 2:00 PM and the drawing will start promptly at 2:00 PM. Door prizes will also be awarded. Homemade food will be sold. The Auction is open to the public.
SLOATSBURG JUBILEES – During the next two years the Sister Servants of Mary Immaculate will be celebrating two milestones in their history. December 8th will mark the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the American Province, under the patronage of the Immaculate Conception and during the coming year 2010, they will celebrate 75 years of ministry in the United States. The celebration of this double jubilee will take place during the weekend of December 11-13, 2009, being highlighted by a special Divine Liturgy of Thanksgiving and a banquet. Adds are being sold for a remembrance book, please pick up a copy of the ad form in the back of the church. In addition the Sisters are embarking on a project to build a shrine to Blessed Josaphata (their foundress) on the grounds of their home in Sloatsburg. The small chapel will be a place of prayer, open year round, where people could come to light candles and pray to Blessed Josaphata for her intercession before God. Memorial Pavers for the walkway leading to the chapel will be sold to help defray the costs of the construction. Forms to sponsor those pavers are also available in the back of the church.
EASTERN CHURCHES CONFERENCE – The Brotherhood of Orthodox Christian Clergy of Philadelphia announces their 15 Annual Conference. The theme, “Divine Liturgy as Heaven on Earth “ will be presented by His Grace, the Right Reverend Jerome, Bishop of Manhattan, New York. SACRAMENT OF PENANCE (CONFESSION) – Before Liturgies or by appointment. Parish members should go to Holy Confession at least once a month on average, or more often if there is a serious or mortal sin. In case of a serious or mortal sin, one may not receive Holy Communion, until they have first gone to Confession and received absolution. For small or ‘daily’ sins, one may receive Holy Communion as often as once a day, provided they have made an examination of conscience, a sincere Act of Contrition and recite the Prayer before Holy Communion, found in the text of the Liturgy.

APOSTLESHIP OF PRAYER MEETINGS RESUME – The October meeting of the Apostleship of Prayer will be held on Monday afternoon, October 5, 2009 starting with the recital of the Holy Rosary at 1:00 PM. New members welcome. Hostess for the meeting is Madolyn Mykulyn.
FINANCE COMMITTEE TO MEET – Members of the Parish Finance Committee will conduct their monthly meeting on Saturday, October 10, 2009 at 9:30 a.m. in the basement of the church. Please notify Rita Katulka if you are unable to attend.
PARISH MEETING – Parish Meeting will change to Bi-Monthly, Starting in November. The meetings will be normally be held on the Fourth Tuesday of every other month. The November meeting will be held on Tuesday, November 17th due to the Thanksgiving Holiday. Our Monthly parish meetings are held to discuss and coordinate cooperatively the work of the parish.
TURKEY-FEST ENVELOPES DISTRIBUTED – Reservation envelopes are being distributed this weekend and next for our 10th Annual Turkey-Fest. Please help us out in getting word out about the event. A TRADITION 78 YEARS IN THE MAKING – Since 1931, the Sisters of the Order of Saint Basil the Great have hosted an annual Pilgrimage that focuses on the healing power of prayer and refreshing one’s spiritual self. This event, held on the Sister’s property in Jenkintown, PA brings together over 1,000 attendees each year. This year the Pilgrimage, Under the Protection of the Mother of God will be held on Saturday, October 3rd from 6 PM to 10 PM and Sunday, October 4th from 10 AM to 5 PM. The full schedule of the day is available on the Sisters’ website – http://www.stbasils.com. The theme this year is, “Mother of God, Omophor of Life”, prompting us to see how Mary, the Mother of God, loves us, cares for us, and works to protect each of us and all life.
