“Among the Marian feasts listed in our Liturgical Year, the feast of the Patronage of the Most Holy Mother of God deserves special consideration.  The cult of the Mother of God as the Protectress of our nation reaches like a golden thread from the times of the Kievan princes to the present day.  The secret of honoring the Mother of God as a Protectress lies, perhaps, in the fact that we are dealing here not with human but with heavenly and more powerful intercession.  Every person, family and nation would like to enjoy such an intercession and protection.  From the very beginning of our Kievan State, we have had great and powerful enemies.  It is small wonder then that our people sought the assistance and protection of the Most Holy Mother of God whose intercession is all-powerful.  For our people, then, the feast of the Patronage has always been, and still remains, a day of great manifestation of love and gratitude to the Most Holy Mother of God, a day of joyous praise and glorification of her protection and intercession.” Julian J. MONTHLY PARISH MEETING – The next Monthly Parish Meeting will be held on, Tuesday, September 29, 2009 at 6:30 p.m. in the Lower Level of the Church.  Our Monthly parish meetings are held on the Fourth Tuesday of each month to discuss and coordinate cooperatively the work of the parish.  All are invited and encouraged to attend. APOSTLESHIP OF PRAYER MEETINGS RESUME – The October meeting of the Apostleship of Prayer will be held on Monday afternoon, October 5, 2009 starting with the recital of the Holy Rosary at 1:00 PM.  New members welcome.  Hostess for the meeting is Madolyn Mykulyn.

CARD PARTY/SOCIAL – The Blessed Virgin Mary Guild of St. Vladimir Ukrainian Catholic Church will sponsor its 77th Annual Card Party/Social on Sunday, October 4, 2009 at 2:00pm in the Parish Center, 428 North Seventh Avenue, Scranton. SPAGHETTI DINNER – Transfiguration of Our Lord Ukrainian Catholic Church, Hanover Section, Nanticoke is sponsoring its Annual Spaghetti Dinner to be held on Sunday, October 4, 2009 in the Church Hall, Bliss and Center Sts., from Noon – 4:00 PM.  Tickets are $8.00 and may be purchased in advance until Wednesday, September 30th.  Tickets will also be available at the door.  However, all advanced sale tickets will be entered in a drawing for a bottle of wine and a quart of Mr. Gagliardi’s Secret Sauce.  For tickets or more information, please call Jill Gagliardi at 824-4603.  A Ukrainian Auction, featuring theme baskets – each with a homemade or handcrafted treat – is being held in conjunction with the dinner.

SLOATSBURG JUBILEES – During the next two years the Sister Servants of Mary Immaculate will be celebrating two milestones in their history.  December 8th will mark the 50th  anniversary of the establishment of the American Province, under the patronage of the Immaculate Conception and during the coming year 2010, they will celebrate 75 years of ministry in the United States.  The celebration of this double jubilee will take place during the weekend of December 11-13, 2009, being highlighted by a special Divine Liturgy of Thanksgiving and a banquet.  Adds are being sold for a remembrance book, please pick up a copy of the ad form in the back of the church.  In addition the Sisters are embarking on a project to build a shrine to Blessed Josaphata (their foundress) on the grounds of their home in Sloatsburg.  The small chapel will be a place of prayer, open year round, where people could come to light candles and pray to Blessed Josaphata for her intercession before God.  Memorial Pavers for the walkway leading to the chapel will be sold to help defray the costs of the construction.  Forms to sponsor those pavers are also available in the back of the church.
A TRADITION 78 YEARS IN THE MAKING – Since 1931, the Sisters of the Order of Saint Basil the Great have hosted an annual Pilgrimage that focuses on the healing power of prayer and refreshing one’s spiritual self.  This event, held on the Sister’s property in Jenkintown, PA brings together over 1,000 attendees each year.  This year the Pilgrimage, Under the Protection of the Mother of God will be held on Saturday, October 3rd from 6 PM to 10 PM and Sunday, October 4th from 10 AM to 5 PM.  The full schedule of the day is available on the Sisters’ website – http://www.stbasils.com.  The theme this year is, “Mother of God, Omophor of Life”, prompting us to see how Mary, the Mother of God, loves us, cares for us, and works to protect each of us and all life.  Join us for this fantastic weekend – come for one service or stay all day!  The services will be bilingual; Ukrainian and English.

THE FEAST OF THE EXALTATION OF THE CROSS
“We extol you, O Lifegiver Christ, and honor your venerable Cross, by which you saved us from the slavery of the enemy.” (Hymn of Praise in the Matins Service of the Feast)
“The veneration of the Holy Cross of the Lord,”- says the Servant of God Andrew Sheptytsky in his pastoral letter on the Holy Cross-“is one of the most significant aspects of the worship of the God-Man… Signing ourselves with the sign of the Cross is one of the oldest customs of Christians.”
The Holy Cross is an ever living symbol of God’s everlasting love toward us sinners, a symbol of Christ’s victory over death and Satan. By venerating the holy Cross we honor Christ’s sacrifice, passion and death. Whenever we sign ourselves with the sign of the holy Cross, we profess our faith in our Savior.

BERWICK CRAFT SALE – SS. Cyril & Methodius Ukrainian Catholic Church, Warren Street & First Avenue, Berwick will hold their Annual Craft Sale on Saturday, October 31st from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM. CENSUS 2010 – The countdown to Census Day is underway! With one of the shortest questionnaires in history, the 2010 Census will take only about 10 minutes for the average household to complete. The census population totals determine which states gain or lose representation in Congress. It also determines the amount of state and federal funding communities receive over the course of the decade. 2010 Census data will directly affect how more than $4 trillion is allocated to local, state and tribal governments over the next 10 years. In order for this funding allocation to be accomplished fairly and accurately, every person living in the United States must be counted on April 1, 2010. The facts gathered in the census also help shape decisions for the rest of the decade about public health, neighborhood improvements, transportation, education, senior services and much more. All responses are used for statistical purposes only, and all are strictly confidential. The U.S. Census Bureau does not ask about the legal status of respondents in any of its surveys and census programs. A TRADITION 78 YEARS IN THE MAKING – Since 1931, the Sisters of the Order of Saint Basil the Great have hosted an annual Pilgrimage that focuses on the healing power of prayer and refreshing one’s spiritual self. This event, held on the Sister’s property in Jenkintown, PA brings together over 1,000 attendees each year. This year the Pilgrimage, Under the Protection of the Mother of God will be held on Saturday, October 3rd from 6 PM to 10 PM and Sunday, October 4th from 10 AM to 5 PM. The theme this year is, “Mother of God, Omophor of Life”, prompting us to see how Mary, the Mother of God, loves us, cares for us, and works to protect each of us and all life.
